Kindergarten applications
Looking into moving to an area w good schools. Was looking at T H Rogers K-8. Called. Last year they had 350 applications for kindergarten. Only 44 spots available. You have to qualify for gt and be in a lottery. Crazy.
So the competition starts.
The pressure to be a more rigorous teacher.
Lincoln is definitively intelligent and creative.
I've been trying to speak more Vietnamese and encouraging Lincoln to speak more Vietnamese. I really wanted my kids to be bilingual, cultured, better thinkers.
Lately I feel like its an uphill battle.
Now I'm wondering if I should just embrace English and go full throttle with him so that he can learn and thrive cognitively.
For at least a year now I've felt like I'm holding him back by not exposing him to learning tools because they're in English.
Conflicted.

Trunk or treat!
The things you do for your kid. I volunteered to decorate my car for trunk or treat.
The "Scary stories told here" sign at Michael's gave me a theme. We had fun decorating the trunk and both boys loved trunk or treating!
Afterwards we played at the church playground- both boys got on swings- carter the flying dragon, and Lincoln - who wanted to get on because he saw a couple of Belles.
"I wish I can be her prince."
Women swooned. Funny boy.

Trash can, cool.
When Carter was cruising, he'd pull himself up on the trash can and check out the automatic lid.
But now that he's walking, he's using it. The other day I saw him throw a Lincoln's brush in the trash can. I looked and found the brush AND two white socks.
Yesterday, I caught him heading for the trash can with toys in hand.
Hm, Gotta put away the valuables- like keys!

Going to the library
We have been going to the library. I loved it when my dad took my brothers and I to the library as a kid. We probably owe the Harris County Library tons of money still!
Finally taking my own kids now. Lincoln and I had three books that have been renewed twice bc we couldn't find them. I finally found then today- two under his bed and one under the guest bed. Guess I'm glad L gets attached to his books! He sleeps w his favorite ones.
Last time L talked to a stranger right after I asked him not to so we had to leave. This time was a much better experience.

Lincoln went swimming at Paige's bd party today. We gave her his toy story woody toothbrush holder and buzz lightyear night light. We also got her widest costume pjs. She loved the Woody toothbrush holder!
After the pool, Paige danced to Party in the house tonight via dancing video game. She knew all the moves!!
Carter has been spitting out foods that are too tough to swallow and bites that are too big. I feel like a bad parent now!!
On the way down to Anne's, L pointer to the cemetery and said
Remember when we visited ong Noi here?
On the way back he mentioned watching Peter and the Wolf on YouTube and reading the library book. He also told me C wasn't buckled in to the car yet.
He's got such a good memory!

2012 Fourth of July with friends and family
Carter's first fourth of July!
I was greeted after nursing him w a big kiss on the cheek!
We had a big breakfast here with the Scarletellas: ham steak, waffles, scrambled eggs, chocolate muffins, milk, coffee, oj. Carter ate lots. L finished his food.
Then the boys went outside for tee ball practice.
Water break, We read books inside.
Outside again for water gun fight!
Lunch:
L had a hot dog topped w Swiss cheese, and broccoli;
C had pasta primavera baby food.
A book, prayer, Nap time
L woke up from his nap complaining that his leg hurt. He was a little needy. Well turns out he ran a fever shortly after.
Around 4pm he was 100.5
Then at 11pm he was 102.0. :(
For dinner we had Q family over. Good food and lots of it! Steak, Korea BBQ by Van, bacon potato salad, baked potato with all the findings, german chocolate and strawberry pound cakes!
Then we played water gun fight in two teams. Chuong plummeted me!
After the kids ate Q took them to buy fireworks. (which took a while bc there was a long line) and Then most of them ended up to be too loud!
While he was gone Carter learned to catch a ball and roll it back to me!
What a fun and memorable day!

June!
Friday Saturday camping at Garber Stat Park, went in the Frio River, which was very cold! I swung into the river from a rope, cool. L threw a rock at Calvin's head, not cool. I don't think the Neutrogena sunblock I brought was waterproof, sux.
Saturday Sunday- San Antonio river walk boat tour, lots of history! It was something we promised L last time we were there. He remembered and mentioned Amy Patterson, good memory!
Sunday- Caleb's 5th bd party at an apartment pool. Kids had a blast playing with water squirters. L wants to buy one... And a pair of goggles.
C starts to have runny diapers.
Monday- visit Ba Co Ngoai who was in ET yesterday, mini stroke. New Orleans cousins were visiting also. I took everyone to watch Brave, the cartoon about princess Marida. Themes: don't take your mom for granted. Listen.
Tuesday- watched Grandma and the kids. L and C napped together on Ong's bed from 12:30-3:00! L woke up kicking C out of the way. C cried. Poor baby C.
C starts to really babble today! The the, Ti Ti, da da, exciting!!
Tuesday pm- tee ball practice. It's been a hot June. Still 100 degrees at 6:30pm! Ate cold watermelon after. C devoured it! Celebrated Q's GMAT writing score- dinner at three olives.
Wednesday- recuperating from the long weekend at home. Slow day...until after nap. L was do excited to use the cutters for Jello that he ran full speed right into the island. You'll probably see the scar from his busted lip for years to come. :(
Tee ball practice And dinner at Tina Tuyet's house.
C still has runny diapers. Maybe his teeth are coming in?
Thursday- planning a slow day and then to grocery shopping after nap time.

Carter's first night sleeping on the floor
This way I don't have to startle in the middle of the night wondering if he's still on the bed at Lang's house.
Success.

Hospital and pictures
Grandma has c diff which is highly contagious. Kids aren't allowed to visit and adults who do need protective gowns and a shower when they get home.
Good thing I haven't allowed L or C to visit and on Monday I had changed my shirt before I greeted the kids, but I'm still a little scared.
I'm gonna disinfectant wipe down the steering wheel and carseat!
New policy:
Kids don't belong in the hospital.
Pictures
Took L and C to jcp for 9 mo pictures today. Invited Tram and Z and N. forgot to put C in a crawling position.
:( We'll have to come back after N scratch goes away for that shot!

C is crawling!
Chi Hien said
Lieu I didn't know her could crawl!
I said Yeah, he swims everywhere.
She said No, he's crawling!
And sure enough
He was crawling at Bo Tuan- to the jiggling keys in his hand.
That was Sunday at Anh Hai's house. (crawfish for memorial day weekend)
He was 9 mo and 3 days old. Very cute!!!

No diapers, slow dancing, tball!
Today L turns 3 yrs, 4 mo.
He's had two consecutive nights of dry underwear! His reward yesterday was a dinosaur sugar cookie. Today was a red outfit from Children's Place. I went shopping fur him yesterday and am doling the clothes (and Spiderman crocs) out slowly.
Today is a long day without Daddy; he left at 7am and will come back at 10pm.
So after breakfast we bathed and brushed and went to Co Tram's house. L and Z
Played with bubbles,
kicked the ball around in the grass-bare feet,
Ate waffles in Z's play car,
Slow danced to Beauty and the Beast,
Fought over a teapot,
Pasted "F" stuff: F, flowers, fish, fork
And had nuggets for lunch
They're both napping now- in their separate houses. :)
I'm looking into tball for him. Maybe at the Y, and I just saw that they have adult exercise classes with Childcare available! Very cool!
$30 membership, $120 tball season. Will take a tour soon!

Mother's Day
I'm reminded today how beautiful our two boys are: no major physical/health problems, their faces are bright, generally happy kids.
L made some mother's day gifts for me today! His first time to say Happy Mother's Day to me without prompt. Memorable!
Ms. Nanette said that
The kids planted seeds, put dirt back on top, and watered them to flower. They painted the pots with their own fingers to make the flower petals.
I love!
L wanted to tape his card to the fridge. The inside has a poem and his hand print. Cuuute!!

Journal entry: increased duties
Tonight after doing the dishes, I felt a need to journal.
Q is studying for the GMAT plus he starts a new job next Monday. So I'm doing my best to allow him weekday evening study time as well as maximum weekend study time. He's also taking a GMAT class every W evening 630-930.
It's been about 4 weeks of studying and I'm beginning to feel like a for real full time mom with a very part time dad. Not knocking on him, just sayin'.
He takes care of the kids between 7-8:30am. He takes L to YCP T and Th am. He takes out the trash. And I'm sure a lot of other things...
I, however, have C full time. I pick up L. I cook/prepare dinner. I bathe the kids, read and pray with them, tuck them in. I wash the dishes. Tend to C at night.
I do the grocery shopping, buy the kids' clothes, clean the house.
Q is super clean and so naturally helps me keep the house clean, especially since we have the house on the market.
I'm bracing myself for next week: when L YCP ends and I have both boys all day everyday AND Q goes to work at 6:30am. Oh, and my MIL will start summer shift which means she won't be available to babysit in the mornings like she does now when I have a dental appt or just need a couple of hours to myself.
So this is what a stay at home mom does- full time. I do enjoy it, but it is definitely not easy.
I'll need a morning routine and lesson plans for sure!
First, very rough draft
Agenda
7:00 milk, espanol/france Apple TV
8:30 prayer, breakfast
9:00 outdoor play
10:00 Circle time

Went to grandma's, got sick!
We went to my moms house Tuesday
after Lincoln's class. By sunset Carter was a little warm, then at night he ran a low fever.
(We drove back home from Lang's the late at night the next day which was last night.) He ran a 102 fever in the middle of the night. He was at 100 off and on during the day. I started to get scared the fever would get out of hand tonight so I went to Kroger for acetametophin to alternate with the ibuprofen.
He's 8 months and 2 weeks.
Here he is stripped down earlier today, I'm also including a darling picture if the boys napping T grandmas together yesterday!

Tuesday night
L slept all the way through the night.
Wed night
he came to our br once. Q walked him back.
Th morning
L came in at 6:30 and woke up C for kicks. Big brothers.

Ferber method, take 1
Started last night
During the first wait, googled it
Ferber method:
Wait 3. Then 5, then 10 minutes.
Day 2: add 12 minute interval and continue.
We did every 10 last night. He cried for about 30 min. Slept until 3:30am. (he usually wakes up around 11:30-1:00)
First nap today- I did every 3. He cried for 1.5 hours. Heartbreaking. I picked him up and fed him lunch, along with L and me.
Both times he fell asleep and woke up and couldn't put himself back to sleep.
Thought I was doing well but I noticed that i had a headache. Took an Advil. We both fell asleep on the nursing chair for before his second nap. I got up and put him in the crib. A cry when his body touched the mattress but then he fell asleep.
Second nap: he's still asleep. Its been two hours. Guess he's super tired from all this crying.
I just woke up. A much needed nap. Will do my best to stick to it for at least 7 days.
This shit is hard.

Wading pool, relaxation, and good people
I was hoping to catch a little bit of sunshine so that we could play in the water today.
Packed L swim trunks and picked up C a swim outfit at Target last night. Picked up an actually pretty cute one-piece for myself too!
It was cloudy this morning but I packed our gear in the stroller anyway. And there was done sun after breakfast! We changed in the Kids Club and although it was cloudy for the first hair hour or so, Mr. Sun came out and stayed out.
Carter fell asleep shortly after we got outside but L had fun splashing and using his imagination with the noodles: they were boats, fishing poles, fish, elephant trunks, swords...
We also ate outside. L had nuggets and fries and a chocolate chip cookie and OJ. C was nursed and had green beans baby food. I had the shrimp cocktail and a frozen piña colada. Nice!
A lady with her teens came after us, asked if that was our stroller and offered to have her boys take it down for us. I accepted and we chatted for a bit. Ann was also a SAHM, from Chicago, her husband travels for work a lot. She sends her kids to catholic private school where they learn etiquette and how to be a good person. I like that.
When we were ready to leave, she came over and held C while I packed up. Took our picture. Such a good wholesome person. I'm touched.

First time sleeping through the night!
Lincoln went to bed without fussing. He came to our room at 6:30 saying,
"Lincoln doi mau xanh roi Lincoln vao phong cua ba me. Lincoln ngu gioi roi mommy co present cho Lincoln?"
He climbed on our bed.
But when i got up to put carter back in the crib, he got limbed back down and waited for me by the door to walk him back to his room, which I did.
A perfect sleeping night for Lincoln!
In the morning, I gave him one of him unopened birthday presents (in a gift bag): the Cars airplane from Co Tuyết. I had him close his eyes for his "surprise". When Carter saw it, he sped to the bag scooting as fast as he could. Lincoln said, "mommy can you put em away?"
I am really hopeful that this is going to be the beginning of him feeling secure and learning how to put himself back to sleep in the middle of the night.

Early morning
Both L and C woke up at 7. We hung out in bed and then played on the living room floor. C is beginning to move across the floor with his belly off the ground. Very exciting stuff!
L is on rodeo gear for his rodeo party
Painted tee
Plaid collar shirt
Handkerchief around the neck
Cowboy hat
And blue jeans!

Night time parenting
Trying to wean C odd the breast from midnight to 6am so that he can learn to sleep through the night. C is 6.5 months.
Meanwhile L is still waking up and coming to our bed to be walked back to his room.
C woke up at 2:20 and finally fell asleep around 3:30 after 2 ounces of water and a lot of holding and patting. He eventually fell asleep on our bed - after Daddy went to tend to L.
Today's Schedule:
Shower
Return red box blue rays
HEB
Mass at SJV
Pick up L

Sleeping through the night?
L still doesn't. He woke up at 1 sitting up crying. I patted him and he immediately fell asleep.
Then at 5 he came to our room crying. He climbed on the bed and I carried him back to his room. He asked for milk which I complied. Then he tightly held onto my hand not wanting me to leave.
Carter's crying. I ask L if he hears C crying, that I'll come back after I tend to C. He doesn't like it but doesn't cry.
At 8 L runs in the room hugging Bolt and crying. I tell him to shush so C can sleep but he wails.
C wakes up crying.
To top it off, I've had coughing fits all night. It's gonna be a long morning until nap time.

The four letter word
Watched The Weatherman with Nicholas Cage the other night. Lots of profanity.
L followed suit: F*@/#!
We told him the movie characters were bad and people shouldn't use those words.

Stomping Grounds
Mommy can you help me Stomping Grounds?
It is Tina's one year anniversary with the kids. We celebrated at SG.
L is scared of the obstacle course parts with netting. He thinks he'll fall through and he's also afraid of heights.
I let him go inside first and he came out asking for help. I went with him a couple of rounds, then watched him for a couple, then went back to Carter.
He has a blast!

I feel loved.
As I was getting all dolled up for my ladies night out birthday dinner, L walks quietly into my restroom. He looks at me with adoration and I can tell he is in love with me. He takes it all in, asks
L: What are we eating?
M: Tuna tetrazini
L: Where are we going?
M: you and daddy are eating pasta at home, I'm going with Co Ami and di Van.
L: L and mommy đi voi cô Ami and di Van.
Dady ở nha voi Baby C.
Q convinces him it's going to be fun to watch Cars, eat dinner and then have popcorn. L wishes me a fun time. Then as I walk put the door he wants me to come back. But doesn't put up a fight.
I missed him a lot actually. There was a beautiful dragon dance at Saigon Pagolac tonight. I wish he could have bees there to see it!
My ladies love me too. Thank you Tina for the decadent chocolate cake! It was divine!

Birthday!
We went to Red Lobster to celebrate my birthday weekend last night. When dessert came out with a candle, L's eyes lit up. As the server placed the cake in front of me, L bursted into tears.
It was hilarious! The poor thing was so excited to get a birthday only to be disappointed that it wasn't his after all. Poor thing.
He pulled himself together pretty quickly and dang Happy Birthday to me though. What a trooper.
Thank you Lincoln. I love you!

Sleeping through the night
L never really ever slept through the night. It's something we accept and to a certain extent even embrace.
Writing this entry reminds me that it might be the reason he's hyperactive- because he's not well rested.
A dear friend of mine shares that after family prayer, they tell the kids what will happen tomorrow if the kids sleep in until the designated time. I tried it with L last night.
I need you to sleep through the night. If you wake up, go back to sleep until the an comes up. Do not wake up Daddy to put you back to sleep. I know you can do it. If you slope through the night Daddy will take you to the mall playground tomorrow. If not, we will still go to the mall but we will walk past the playground.
He burst wildly into our room at sunrise this morning:
"L ngu giới!
Daddy cho L đi playground ở mall được không?!"
Precious.

New Year breakfast
Today is the first day of the Lunar New Year.
L woke up requesting:
I need waffle mommy.
Funny. I didn't think he liked waffle. But I sure do! So I fixed him some waffles and strawberries. Me: with bananas and walnut and whipped cream. Yum! What a way to get in our fruits.
Come to think of it, he had a VN waffle-shaped coconut leaf pastry yesterday at Ba Nois house. That's probably what he was asking for this morning.

Tet shopping
This year Tet shopping included taking the while family with the two boys in a double stroller to HK. It was Carter's first time to stroll around in the big bog seat.
Big brother Lincoln passed out shortly after we got there but Carter was do excited he stated awake the whole time, looking at everything. He did r fall asleep until the tail end of left wrapping- and it took over an to wrap these 6 gifts.
I love to Tet family with the traditional red cellophane wrapping. The gift wrapping lady commented that my gifts were meaningful, not any of the preserved fruit that no one eats, but foods each person would prefer!

Learning letters- fast!
We went to Tuyet's house on his birthday- Monday- after Stomping Grounds, and the kids played with Legos. Some had letters.
Lincoln can name the Q and T and J.
T like Chua' (Jesus)
I remember telling him the other day that Q is an O with a stick. And while we read the ABC book one night he asked what a letter was and I said J for Jesus. I can't believe the memory this kid has. It really does just take onc time for kids to learn!

Lincoln muon tam
As we were viewing pictures after the JCP photo session, L was watching the tv. Afterwards we asked him if he was ready to go and he said
"No, Lincoln muon' tam'"
I wondered what he was watching that made him say that. He knows his bath time routine is after dinner.
Then after we took the elevator down and as w were walking out the door he says
"Di chu' Thuong's shower?"
We were on our way to a baby shower.
Precious.

Reading and Writing
L has known how to write an O for a while. He learned the capital L a couple weeks ago and the lowercase i several days ago. Today he showed me C.
We read the a, b, and c baby Einstein books after dinner today.
Before he went to sleep L said:
Mommy? Can I show you O for octopus and L for Lincoln?
(Gets up and draws the letters on his pillow) and says: O for octopus and L for Lincoln and C for baby Carter!
I was so pleased to see the satisfaction he had of having mastered a new skill. It was also so exciting to see him learn his letters so quickly!
LiNcoln. Next letter to write: N

Noi tiếng Viêt
We met up with my parents at Bac Du's house Saturday evening and Lincoln was talking to them in VN. Then Bac Gai' said that when they start school they lose it. I told her I'm afraid of that happening too so I'm trying very hard to keep it in our house.
Yesterday I noticed Lincoln speaks English almost all the time even at home. Gasp! When/how did this happen without my noticing it?
So I spoke VN all day and also translated everything he said into VN. It worked! By the time Q came home he could repeat himself in VN and ask for things in English, then VN. Whew!
Gotta keep my eye in the ball.

Brain Freeze!
Went to Phonecian Deli for dinner Sunday evening.
L loved the bread, liked the hummus. For the first time, complimented cucumbers and tomatoes.
Afterwards we checked out the Gelato selection. L got to try several flavors. We finally ordered a M w dark chocolate- for me, and forest berries- for L and Daddy. With two "spoons" in hand he said "I like forest berries!" We didn't notice how fast he was gulping down the ice cold cream until he wailed, the tip of his nose turning red, and whimpered "owie!". Brain freeze! Lol
We're definitely going back!

Cookies!
L balled up and cut how own sugar cookies! Two stars and a gingerbread man.
When the cookies were done he was so thrilled that he ate 2!
After dinner we also made walnut chocolate chip cookies from scratch.
He squeezed each scoop of dough onto the baking sheet.
A fun day!

A day in the life of Lincoln
Lincoln's first day back at YCP. He ate all of his strawberries, most of the cheese squares, and some of the ham squares. Over an hour of nap.
+ was able easily to match up snowmen's scarves
- ran out of line even after Ms Maria said to get back. Pouted upon correction
We went to Tina's house afterwards and she gave him THREE "shake n go" cars!
McQueen
Professor 2
And another
Lincoln wrote capital L's all on his own today.
He really gnawed on his pork chop bones tonight and asked if he could have more from "under the nong'"

Playing outside
Our first morning outside since Baby Carter. This is after playing basketball and two squares.
We just had a breakfast of waffle and berries and whipped cream and milk. I had to bribe him with basketball to get him to try blueberries for the first time. He liked it and ate three more!
L just "showed" me "how to make a triangle" by putting the ends if his sunglasses together.
Gotta go play!

Lincoln @ Jojo's
Took Lincoln to spend the evening with Co Tuyet and the kids. When I picked him up he was in his flannel striped pj's, hoodie jacket and carrying his "Bolt" doggie. What a sight!
I finally was able to capture him on camera singing Jingle Bells! Very cute.
He's growing so tall and knows so much! O yeah, I called Ms. Maria to see if YCP resumes today; it's teacher inservice but she did say that Lincoln is so fun to talk to because she "can reason with him". She also commented that she loved our Christmas letter.
These are the good days I'm going to miss. Glad I'm documenting!
